Scheduled Maintenance: Why It Matters and What It Includes

Scheduled maintenance is the list of services your vehicle's manufacturer recommends at certain mileage or time intervals. It is designed to catch wear early, keep fluids and filters fresh and prevent the kind of failures that leave you stuck on the side of I-90 or facing a big repair bill. Staying on top of it is one of the best ways to keep a car or truck reliable for the long haul.

What scheduled maintenance usually includes

Every vehicle is different, so your owner's manual or maintenance guide is the starting point. Common items include:

  • Engine oil and filter changes.
  • Tire rotation and tire inspection.
  • Engine air filter and cabin air filter replacement.
  • Brake inspections and brake fluid service.
  • Coolant inspection and replacement at the specified interval.
  • Transmission, differential and transfer case fluid service.
  • Spark plugs on gas engines.
  • Fuel filters and water separator service on diesels.
  • Belt and hose inspection.
  • Inspection of steering, suspension, exhaust and lights.

Normal vs. severe service

Many manufacturers list two schedules. The severe schedule applies when a vehicle is used in harder conditions, such as:

  • Towing a trailer or carrying heavy loads.
  • Frequent short trips, especially in cold weather.
  • Driving on dusty, gravel or dirt roads.
  • Extended idling.
  • Mountain driving and long grades.
  • Very hot or very cold temperatures.

A lot of driving in Ellensburg and Central Washington checks several of those boxes. Ranch and gravel roads, winter cold, summer heat, pass trips and towing are all part of normal life here. Check your manual to see which schedule fits how you actually drive.

Why it pays off

  • Fewer surprises. Worn belts, leaking hoses, thin brake pads and weak batteries are much easier to deal with on your schedule than on the side of the road.
  • Longer vehicle life. Fresh fluids and filters protect engines, transmissions and differentials from wear.
  • Better safety. Regular checks of brakes, tires, steering and lights catch safety issues early.
  • A service record. Records help with warranty questions and resale value.

Diesel trucks and work vehicles

Diesel trucks have their own maintenance needs, including larger oil capacities, specific oil ratings, fuel filters, water separators and, for many, heavier towing duty. Keeping up with fuel filter service matters, because contaminated fuel is hard on pumps and injectors. For bigger diesel work, see diesel engine builds and repair and diesel transmission builds and repair.

Seasonal checks for Central Washington

  • Before winter: battery test, coolant protection, tires and tire pressure, wipers, heater and defroster, lights.
  • Before summer: AC performance, cooling system, tires and brakes, especially before towing season.

Keep your records together

Keep receipts and records in one place, or ask us for a copy of your service history. Records help you and your next mechanic know what has been done and when, so nothing is skipped or done twice. They also help when you sell the vehicle, because buyers like to see that it was cared for.

How we help

Bring us your vehicle and your owner's manual or past records if you have them. We will look at where it is in its schedule, inspect it and let you know what is due now, what can wait and what we noticed along the way. We go over everything before work is approved.
