Exhaust Repair: Leaks, Rattles and Broken Hangers

Your exhaust system carries hot gases from the engine out the back of the vehicle, away from you and your passengers. It also quiets the engine. Because it hangs under the vehicle, it takes a beating from heat, moisture, winter road treatments, potholes and gravel. When something goes wrong, you can usually hear it, smell it or feel it.

Signs of an exhaust problem

  • The exhaust is louder than usual. A hole in a pipe or muffler, a failed gasket or a cracked manifold can make the vehicle noticeably louder.
  • Ticking or tapping, especially when cold. A leak at the exhaust manifold or a broken manifold stud often ticks on a cold start and may quiet down as parts warm up and expand.
  • Rattles underneath. Loose heat shields, broken hangers or loose clamps can rattle over bumps or at certain engine speeds.
  • A hanging or dragging pipe. Broken hangers let the exhaust sag or even drag on the road.
  • An exhaust smell in the cab. This is the one not to ignore.
  • A check engine light. Leaks ahead of the oxygen sensors can affect their readings and set codes.

Why exhaust leaks matter

Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. A leak under the vehicle, especially near the cab, can let exhaust inside. If you smell exhaust in the cab, or anyone gets a headache or feels drowsy while driving, open the windows, get out of the vehicle when it is safe and have it inspected before driving it again.

Leaks near the engine can also expose nearby wiring, hoses and plastic parts to heat. A dragging pipe can catch on something and cause further damage.

Why Central Washington is hard on exhaust systems

Winter road treatments and moisture cause rust on pipes, clamps, hangers and heat shields. Short trips in cold weather let water condense inside the exhaust without fully drying out, which speeds up corrosion from the inside. Gravel roads, ruts and off-road use can dent pipes and break hangers. Lifted trucks and 4x4s may need exhaust routing that clears suspension and driveline parts through their full travel.

What we inspect

  • Exhaust manifolds and manifold studs for cracks and leaks.
  • Gaskets and flanges.
  • Pipes, mufflers and resonators for holes, rust and damage.
  • The catalytic converter for physical damage, rattles or restriction.
  • Hangers, rubber isolators and clamps.
  • Heat shields for looseness and rattles.
  • Clearance to the body, frame, fuel lines, brake lines and wiring.
  • Related warning lights and sensor data, if the check engine light is on.

Repairs we do

Depending on what we find, a repair may be as simple as replacing a broken hanger or a failed gasket, or it may mean replacing a section of pipe, a muffler, a damaged catalytic converter or a cracked manifold. We repair exhaust systems to factory-type routing and function, with the right hangers and clearances so parts do not rattle or rub. We explain what we found and go over options before the work is approved.

Diesel trucks

Diesel exhaust systems run hot under load and include turbocharger connections and sensors that need to be sealed correctly. Leaks at the manifold or turbo flanges can cause noise and affect how the engine runs. For larger engine work, see diesel engine builds and repair.

When to come in

If you smell exhaust inside the vehicle, get it checked before you drive it again. Come in soon for a dragging pipe, a sudden increase in noise or a new rattle underneath. Small leaks and broken hangers are usually easier to fix when caught early.
